How to review your own games

The biggest difference between top players and players with the same mechanics is what happens after the match. They look at their mistakes and make sure they never happen again. A mistake you repeat weighs more than one you make once.

1. Find the moment you got scuffed

When I review a cup, this is the first thing I look for: the zone where your HP and your mats went at the same time, for example minus 150 HP and minus 500 mats in Zone 6.

2. Go back to the cause

The cause usually comes earlier than the moment it hurts. If you took damage because you went late, ask why you went late. Often the answer is in the zone before, see Playing zone.

3. Look at the whole game

Wherever you lose HP, mats or heals, look for the mistake. Wherever you gain something or make a good rotation, there is a good play to keep.

4. Ask the same questions after every death

Which mistake put you in that situation in the first place? What happened there? What should you have done instead? What did the player who won the game do in the same situation? Who killed you and from how far does not matter.

5. Write down what to do instead

"I was edge in Zone 4" is not a review. Write down what you should have done and what you are going to work on.

How to judge what you find

Not everything that went wrong was a mistake, and not all of your mistakes decided the game. Judge the decision first, then what it cost you.

  • Decision, not result: You rotated deep and the zone pulled back to the side you left. With what you knew at that moment it was the right call, so it is not a mistake. But if you stood edge because you reacted to the zone too late, a bad pull is not bad luck.
  • Real bad luck: No chests spawn at your spot, or your opponent finds a gold pump offspawn while you hold a grey SMG. Sometimes you find no pump at all, and that is bad luck too. Turning away because you got outdropped and ending up with no loot is a mistake.
  • The main mistake: It is the one that threw the game away. You stay edge in Zone 4, the zone pulls away, you get sprayed by the whole lobby and have to force a desperate play. Your mistake is Zone 4, not the forced play, as long as you really had to make it.
  • No main mistake: If nothing threw the game away, list the small things that together cost you points.
  • What it cost: Edge in Zone 4 and a max pull, but nobody hits you. Still wrong, but it did not decide the game, so one line in your notes is enough. Losing around 100 HP or 500 mats in that zone or the next makes it a real mistake.
  • Two zones later: Edge in Zone 4 when deep was open, late and edge again in Zone 5, scuffed in Zone 6. Mark the mistake in Zone 4, where it happened, and count the rest as what it cost you.

After the cup

How you judge your cup decides what you work on before the next one.

1. Judge your games, not the payout

In a final where only the win pays, second place earns the same as last. You still did a lot more right than most of the lobby. Judge yourself against the lobby, not against the prize money.

2. Find the main mistake of every game

How to find it is above.

3. Take exactly one goal into the next cup

One goal, not three. It comes from your main mistake, and it has to be something you can count at the next cup.

4. Switching spots

If you had very different results on the same spot, it was not the spot. A new spot is something for after the finals, see Gameplan and spot.

Reviewing a bad cup

When I review a cup, I mostly skip the good games and watch the ones that ended 12th or worse. That is where the mistakes happened that ruined the cup. I still watch the good games too, because there can be mistakes in them as well.

Do the same with your cup. In every game you watch, find the zone where you lost HP and mats at the same time and go back to its cause, see above. From your main mistake you take one goal into your next cup.
